College’s football team score big after league win

Tameside College and Clarendon Sixth Form College students score big win in league final.

The college’s male football team is elated after being crowned this year’s English College’s Football Association (ECFA) Greater Manchester champions, after beating rivals The Sixth Form Bolton 1-0.

The last time the college won the league was in 2018 when the team beat Wigan and Leigh College in the final match.

The male and female football teams form a vital part of the college’s enrichment programme, allowing students to keep fit and healthy whilst socialising with others.

Jack Mercer, former St Phillip Howard Academy student and the team’s vice captain, said: “It’s been a great season for us winning the league, after quite a few years without one so it’s particularly a nice feeling to win it for the college. All of the team have been fantastic throughout season and we deserved this title, as we were the most consistent team week in week out and kept going even when things didn’t go our way on points.”

Mark Pollitt, the team’s manager and Tameside College and Clarendon Sixth Form College’s health and wellbeing officer, said: “The team has been great to work with this year. Over 25 players from across all of our college courses have helped us to win our ECFA Greater Manchester League and the team spirit within the squad has been fantastic. Well done to everyone who played there part.”

The team train regularly and play every Wednesday with matches taking place at Blocksages Playing Field. If you would like to find out more about the college’s enrichment programme and how to take part, visit the college website or head to the college’s sports hub.
