This two year course aims to provide you with the vital skills and techniques required for a career in the Fashion & Textiles industry. Throughout the course you will cover the specialist skills and aspects of Fashion & Textiles, such as contemporary and historical research, analysis, ideas generation, exploration of materials, design, pattern cutting, garment manufacture, visual presentation and communication. You will develop a range of design skills through the completion of various design and production projects which will include the construction of different garments such as skirts, trousers, tops and dresses. Competitions and live briefs are often used to give you a genuine working experience of professional design and production practice.
Following successful completion of this 2 year course you will receive a Level 3 qualification in Fashion & Textiles, up to 168 UCAS points and the equivalent of 3 A Levels. The course is also recognised by employers and apprenticeship schemes.
You will be working within a professional design studio atmosphere with access to industrial and domestic equipment, tools and machinery. You will be supported by highly committed, subject specialist teaching staff with industry experience and a proven track record of high levels of achievement for their learners, staff will encourage you to develop all-round skills to fulfil your own creative potential. We are also highly proactive in working with external agencies to create live briefs, working for real clients. Recent collaborations have been with IKEA, to produce innovative skirt designs using their exciting fabric range. The learners have also produced costumes for the Performing Arts Department with great success. Opportunities to define and work towards personal development and progression goals are key for us to help learners develop as highly creative and unique individuals.
Outside of your lessons there are opportunities to continue to achieve and succeed by taking advantage of the creative facilities at the college. We have a large library with a huge selection of books ranging from art & design, fashion history, fashion illustration, pattern cutting, to an exciting range of fashion magazines as used by the industry. You will be involved in the department’s Creative Jam, here you will work on projects in collaboration with learners from different subject areas. This experience will help you to develop as a well-equipped creative individual, with a cross section of skills to give you strengths in the wider area of the Creative & Digital Arts. The college has regularly offered exciting trips to enrich learning and project work. Last year many learners took part in visits to Berlin and Paris as well as excursions to Museums and art galleries in Manchester and the North West.
You are required to have 4 GCSEs grade 9 to 4 including maths and/or English.
Successful interview with an art tutor (bring a portfolio of your art and design work).
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Good drawing skills are a bonus.

On this course you will receive project briefs that will introduce you to a scenario, question or creative challenge to solve. This setting will take you on a journey that could require you to produce sketchbooks, digital portfolios, Blogs, design sheets, 3D or 2D outcomes, artists/designer analysis, experiments, maquettes, presentations and many more. All of these requirements will be supported through specialist workshops, tutorials, advice and guidance, feedback and discussion.

● After completing this course student’s go on to higher education within Fashion & Textiles related subjects, sometimes our learners apply successfully for courses outside of this sector.
● Ultimately employment opportunities within this sector can range from multiple design fields, costume design, fashion retailing and manufacturing, fashion designer, fashion merchandising, textile designer, marketing, textile pattern cutting, to name just a few.
● An Apprenticeship or Degree Level Apprenticeship within the creative industries.
