Maths challenge awards ‘add up’ for students

Five students at Clarendon Sixth Form College claim top prizes in prestigious national mathematics competition.

Josue Dawson, Evar Hama-Salih, Adam Manfred, Morgan Jones and Dylan Freeman were awarded one gold, three silver and one bronze certificates after taking part.

The UK Senior Mathematical Challenge (UKSMC) is organised by the UK Mathematics Trust and is aimed at students aged 16-19.

The challenge involves sitting a 90 minute, multiple choice question paper, which tests students’ ability to apply creative and logical thinking to solve complex problems. Topics can include algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics, amongst others.

The UKSMC is a boost to students’ CVs as it will help with their university applications and future career plans.

Jonathan Burgess, A-level mathematics teacher at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “”We were delighted that our students did so well in the challenge this year. Our students have excelled, showing their immense talent and hard work. This really is another string to add to their bow and will stand them in good stead for their future studies. I am extremely proud, well done.”

Alongside activities such as this, Clarendon Sixth Form College offers a variety of support, including the Futures Programme, which awards bursaries to high achievers to help with their studies.
