International work experience expands students’ horizons

Clarendon Sixth Form College students gain hands on experience during Vienna placement.

Media students recently took part in a two week work experience opportunity in Vienna, Austria, as part of the Turing Scheme.

The Turing Scheme is a government initiative which provides funding for students to take part in international work experience placements, to gain employability skills and experience employment abroad.

During their visit, students worked with professional media companies including Stilkraft Film, Bitix Media, and TV Salon Film Productions to produce a creative video project based on their time in the city.

To inspire their projects, students took part in a range of cultural activities such as a guided walking tour of central Vienna, during which they learnt about the city’s history of art, music, culture and film. This included viewing a replica of the painting, The Last Supper, in the city’s oldest church and touring filming locations for Mission Impossible and The Third Man.

As part of the project students also visited and filmed key landmarks, including the Austrian parliament, which they had the privilege of touring.

The trip has allowed students to develop key skills such as filming, interviewing and editing, whilst also giving them an exciting insight into international careers in media.

Harry Arnold, media and animation teacher at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “This opportunity has given students the chance to step outside of their comfort zones and see what it’s like to work in the creative industries abroad. They’ve embraced the experience with enthusiasm and professionalism and I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved so far. I really look forward to seeing what they have produced.”

Experiences such as this help to prepare students for their next steps, giving them practical experience and confidence to pursue careers in the media and film industry.
